Does Acupuncture Hurt? Short answer- Nope! Yes there will of course be a sensation felt during insertion. The needles are very thin with a sharp point, so mostly you should feel a quick prick and then it should go away. Some people may experience a dull ache, a quick electric sensation, or a muscle release, however once the initial sensation is felt it should go away and you will be able to relax into comfort.
How does acupuncture work? There are over 350 acupuncture points along the body that are all indicated to perform a specific function. When the needle is placed in a point it sends a signal to the nervous system to perform that function- which teaches the body to heal itself.
Does Chinese Medicine treat the root of disease? Absolutely, Chinese medicine observes any symptom as an indicator of where disharmony can be found in the body. So while with treatment the patient will be experiencing relief of their symptoms with acupuncture and Chinese herbs, the part of the body that was off balance is also being healed. This makes it possible for the experience to be extremely minimized or even go away entirely.
What does a treatment plan look like? Treatment plans are customized to an individuals needs, so it may look slightly different for everyone. Generally speaking, Chinese Medicine is a cumulative treatment- it takes a few sessions for the body to adapt to the changes we’re making for longer than a few days or so. Therefore we treat more frequently in the beginning and dial back frequency over time. Because of this here’s the general treatment plan recommended: 1-2x week for 2 weeks, 1x week for 3-4 weeks, once every two weeks to once a month indefinitely. In addition we will discuss what the patient can do at home between sessions to facilitate recovery including nutrition, lifestyle, and movement/activity.
What conditions can Chinese Medicine help with? I like to say if you have a pulse than you’ll benefit from treatment. Basically anything you’d like to address that isn’t a medical emergency or doesn’t require surgery can benefit from Chinese Medicine. Our medicine is preventative so even if you’re perfectly healthy you’ll benefit by maintaining your health.
Are there any side effects or risks associated with acupuncture? Acupuncture is a safe practice when performed by a qualified practitioner. Like any medical procedure there can be some risk. Possible side effects include temporary soreness, bruising, or bleeding at the needle placement site. In rare cases, more serious complications can occur such as infection, but these are extremely rare when performed by a trained professional. It’s always important to choose a licensed acupuncturist and discuss any concerns or prior medical conditions before starting treatment.
Patient Experiences
“Sarah has a warm and inviting tone and energy. As someone that has a needle phobia, I was super hesitant. She heard out my concerns with needles and what I was seeking and was one of the first people in healthcare that made me feel heard. She asked many questions about what I wanted out of the service and did it in a way that was comfortable for me to open up. After the appointment, I didn't feel anxiety for almost 3 days straight! Something I never felt in my life. I am immensely grateful for Sarah and cannot wait to return (needle phobia and all)!”
“Sarah is amazing at what she does! She did acupuncture to help me with some stomach issues that were resolved in less than 24 hours. You are in good hands when you’re receiving treatment from her!”
